When Dorian Hunter is hired by a wealthy business tycoon to retrieve a historic artifact from his family’s ancestral property, he assumes it is business as usual.  As one of the country’s most prominent antiques investigators, he is offered a financial reward too alluring to resist. And so, Dorian sets out on what should be a routine operation.  Upon his arrival, however, Dorian discovers to his horror that the dilapidated mansion north of Charleston, South Carolina is not abandoned like he was told.  There he meets Lucilla, a seven-hundred-year-old vampire who has lived in exile for nearly two and a half centuries.  Known by local legend as The Lady of Shadow, Lucilla treats Dorian’s intrusion with hostility and threatens to take his life.  In an act of desperation, Dorian offers his services to the vampire in exchange for her mercy.  Lucilla agrees and a torrid affair between them begins.  While her sexual prowess transcends his wildest fantasies, Dorian soon becomes terrified when Lucilla’s affection for him takes a dark turn.  Willing to do anything to please him, Lucilla’s jealous rage leads to unspeakable acts of violence and before long the outside world descends upon them.  Dorian finds himself trapped.
